5/24/2023 0 Comments Flicker by Kaye ThornbrughLee’s best friend, Kendall, was fairly stock and not overly interesting. It opens up with Lee worrying about very cliché things I see in almost every single teen novel where the MC goes to some form of high school, where the main character is the loner type losing her best friend to the lust for popularity. Thornbrugh contacted me about reading her novel, I was intrigued enough to say yes.Īctually, the book got off to a fairly rocky start with me. For reasons of personal preference, I don’t often read books about fairies. I will readily admit that Flicker is not the kind of book I would pick up at first glance. With the help of a rag-tag group of teenage Seers, Lee must master her newfound magical talent and outwit a cunning faerie determined to destroy her. Nasser is a Seer-a human with magical powers-and Lee is quickly plunged into his world: a sprawling city teeming with magic and mystery, where supernatural creatures walk hidden among humans. When sixteen-year-old Lee Capren is spirited away to Faerie, she is forced to serve capricious faeries as a prized portrait artist… and live as their prisoner.Ī chance encounter with the charming Nasser grants Lee a chance for freedom-but what felt like mere days in Faerie spanned years in the human world, and Lee no longer has a home to return to.

5/24/2023 0 Comments Love is war 16Spending 15 to 30 minutes a day sitting on the floor helps take your hip joints into ranges they don’t normally reach and loads your spine in advantageous ways. They are the key to being able to do all the things you love well into old age. The following moves are basic body maintenance, and suitable for everyone. We’ve found that motion can counteract the effects of modern living, enhance your capacity for easy movement and improve all the body’s systems (digestive, circulatory, immune, lymphatic). We have spent two decades coaching everyone from athletes to ordinary people who just want to feel better. Generally, it is better to think about pain and discomfort in the body not as tissue damage or trauma but as a request for change. Add in today’s personal transport, mechanical conveniences and screens that glue us to our chairs, and what do you get? Achy hips and backs, stiff necks, sore knees, and a significant downgrading of many markers of good health. But our bodies haven’t: we are still built to move in all the ways our ancestors needed to. T hings have changed a lot since the days when humans chased animals for food and had to walk long distances for water. 5/24/2023 0 Comments In the unlikely event blumeThe New Jersey-born, Key West-based Blume was a producer on the movie, but she can also be seen in front of the camera as the subject of the documentary Judy Blume Forever. All told, her 29 books have sold 90 million copies, despite some of them being frequent targets of book bans. During the 80s, she received 2,000 letters a month. In addition to her books for young adults ( Forever, Deenie), she’s written picture books, children’s and middle grade books (the Fudge series), and adults ( Wifey, In the Unlikely Event, her most recent novel from 2015). Judy Blume chronicled the agony and angst of navigating puberty, adolescence, and sex for generations of the curious, confused, and clueless, and now comes Lionsgate’s big-screen version of arguably her angstiest, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret (Atheneum Books for Young Readers). 5/24/2023 0 Comments Ingo chroniclesAnd I think that’s exactly what fans needed right about now. 5/24/2023 0 Comments The Poetic Edda by AnonymousThis translation of the Poetic Edda is titled "The Elder Edda: A Book of Viking Lore", and the material contained within is frequently referred to as "viking lore" throughout. Unfortunately, Orchard's translation not only continues most of the problems found in Larrington's translation, but also introduces a variety of new issues. Specifically I had hoped that Orchard's 2011 Penguin Classics translation would be a superior alternative to Carolyne Larrington's commonly available Oxford World's Classics translation (titled "The Poetic Edda" and first published in 1996). PLEASE NOTE: Due to poor organization of translations on this website, I must note that this is a review of Andy Orchard's translation of the "Poetic Edda", which he has titled "The Elder Edda: A Book of Viking Lore".īeing familiar with Andy Orchard's handbook on Norse mythology ("Dictionary of Norse Myth and Legend", 1997) and finding it to be a nice middle ground between Rudolf Simek's deeply flawed handbook and the limited scope of John Lindow's own, it was with high hopes that I waited for Andy Orchard's 2011 English translation of the Poetic Edda, or, alternately, as Orchard has chosen to go with here, the "Elder Edda". 5/24/2023 0 Comments Jew-Ish by Jake CohenThough his most popular posts are of an avocado breakfast sandwich on Instagram (538,963 likes) and a simple pasta dough recipe (1.4 million likes on TikTok), his Jewish-themed videos-babka stuffed with cookie butter, French onion latkes and the Persian crispy rice dish known as tahdig among them-are also virtual favorites. Thomas Jefferson the Art of Power by Jon Meacham available in Hardcover on, also read synopsis and reviews. At first blush, this might seem odd considering that Thomas Jefferson was a prime mover in the creation of our nation’s first political party. In so doing, he issues a none-too-subtle condemnation of the Washington gridlock and political intransigence which characterizes our current age. In his book, Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power, Jon Meacham uses our third president to promote a message of bipartisanship and across-the-aisle problem solving. During the New Deal, Franklin Delano Roosevelt (using great political slight-of-hand), used Jeffersons’s advocacy of ‘negative liberty’ as the philosophical basis for his Four Freedoms platform. During the Civil War, both sides enlisted Jefferson’s aid his opinions on states’ rights gave rhetorical ammunition to the South while Abraham Lincoln used the language of the Declaration to inveigh against the spread of slavery. Ever since his death on July 4th, 1826 (50 years to the day after the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, I might add), subsequent generations of Americans have appropriated the life and legacy of Thomas Jefferson in order to advance agendas and justify arguments. |
